Lately, I have felt a bit overwhelmed. Not necessarily because I am doing too much, but because of the thoughts and feeling that lay beyond the action. This is what determines if I will in fact, surf the waves of overwhelm, or sink beneath them with a mouth full of water.
Every bit of new ground I navigate insights the same feelings of vulnerability exposure that you probably feel in your own life when navigating new territory. That uncomfortable feeling of being splayed wide-open accompanies risk. Risk means there is an opportunity to learn to surf new waters despite the feelings of overwhelming.
The Ultimate Self-Kindness
When I start to swallow water and feel that sinking sensation, I know feelings of exposure are evident. That's when I am challenged to put my theories into practice and demonstrate true self-kindness toward my efforts and myself. Recognizing the choice for courage, no matter how imperfectly, helps me move beyond the unsatisfying world of coping and status quo.
The ultimate form of self-kindness is true personal alignment. This is probably the single most important key to surfing the waves or sinking under them. Listening to my core and welcoming all parts of myself in the struggle is the way to ultimately walk in personal kindness, integrity, congruence and alignment with my values.
Fact checking my story is a requirement for the fallout of vulnerability exposure. The voices that try to keep me safe, small and unseen are one version of the story I may have held onto in an attempt to remain safe, but generally not the truth.
That means I stop to check-in and get curious about what’s going on inside myself. Through self-awareness and self-permission I begin to allow the raw feelings of exposure and vulnerability to come out of hiding and into the light, where I can align them with the truth.
Personal alignment has to do with syncing to my Source of life and stability. This is the place of unconditional acceptance and value, even on the worst days. (Interestingly, vulnerability is not the worst day it only feels that way!) That’s why there needs to be a constant truth alignment and recalibration. We all need to live from a place of unconditional acceptance and value, right?
When I’ve been courageous and taken risks there will always be a huge new wave to surf. That is when I need to look to the supporters in my life who encourage my bravery, help hold up my arms when I’m weary and champion me.
This is not the time I look for approval from the cheap seats, but the support of those in my inner circle. This spot is only earned through true investment of time, presence and sharing of life. This spot isn’t for the masses, but only a few.
The next time you want to surf the wave instead of taking on water, stop and get curious. Fact check your story. Sync and recalibrate with the truth of the One who loves you unconditionally. Get encouragement from your closest supporters and realign with your personal integrity, so you can surf your wave instead of being taken under by it.
