Do you ever feel like you can’t move forward and are stuck in the same patterns or circumstances? You may be demonstrating signs of resistance. Most of us don’t even know we’re in resistance. I sure didn’t for the years I struggled with what WAS without knowing how to shift into what I wanted.
How often do you settle for what you don’t want without realizing that you have settled? Resistance is a messenger with valuable information lurking beneath the surface, but it’s not going to merely disappear by plowing through or bullying your way into submission. It will resurface.
One of the ways you might recognize resistance is through your body. The signs might show up in your health as subtle gasps for attention, to be heard and acknowledged. One of my first memories of my body carrying resistance and fear was when I was seven years old, in the hospital under an oxygen tent being treated for asthma. My parents were heading into a divorce and it literally took the breath right out of me. My little self didn’t have the tools to process the the upheaval my family was facing that would separate us from our father.
All those years ago I never knew my body was telling me my heart was broken and afraid. I learned how to push the pain aside and adult my way into life, never recognizing that the resistance when triggered, signals in my body.
A Climate of Personal Hospitality
When I started to make the connection, I began to get curious and present within myself. I learned to create a safe space within that I refer to as a climate of “Personal Hospitality” and what I teach other women to do, too.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m in resistance, I don’t want a finger scolding, because that will merely support avoidance of what I’m feeling. When I’m in resistance, I need to know that I am on my team and am willing to sit, listen and be present to what’s going on inside me. When I’m willing to show up for myself, I discover the reason’s I’m afraid and resistant and how I need to care for myself to move through it.
Resistance reveals fear and fear reveals a buried belief that there’s not enough to go around or that you’re not enough. It reveals limitation and scarcity thinking that is nothing to be ashamed of, but more aptly presents an invitation to get present to what’s really going on within you.
